The name Poronin, in relation to the name of the river, appears as early as 1254. The first written records of the village of Poronin date back to 1624. Around 1620, the village became a separate settlement, separating itself from the Biały Dunajec River. In 1806, a chapel was built here, and in 1833, an independent parish with a church was established. Based on the nearby, small iron ore deposits, pig iron was processed here, which was used primarily to make scythes and plowshares. As early as the early 19th century, Poronin was a summer resort, as famous as Zakopane. For many years, Poronin was the commune’s capital. In 1977, along with neighboring villages, Poronin was incorporated into the Tatra Commune. However, on December 30, 1994, the Poronin Commune was re-established. The area around Poronin is used for tourism and skiing. Poronin is home to the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene.
