The InterCity 109 Sobieski train is a rail connection on the Warsaw – Vienna route, which also stops in other cities along the way, such as Katowice, Rybnik, and Ostrava, and terminates at Wien Westbahnhof (Wien West Station). The train departs from Warsaw East at 1:44 PM and arrives in Vienna at 9:49 or 9:53 PM. The journey takes approximately 8 hours.

The Warsaw-Vienna IC train “Sobieski,” via Katowice, has several significant advantages that make it one of the most interesting international connections in Poland. It is one of the most recognizable international connections from Poland. The train has been operating since October 19, 1974. Initially operating as a EuroCity (EC), it is currently designated as an InterCity (IC). The train has the status of a European-class train, being part of the former EuroCity network. The train connects Warsaw with Silesia, the Czech Republic, and Vienna. The trains are composed of modern PKP InterCity and ÖBB Austrian Railways carriages. The train includes 1st Class, 2nd Class, and a restaurant car. The train is accessible to passengers in wheelchairs and with bicycles. The train is equipped with air conditioning, 230V power outlets, and Wi-Fi. The train runs daily, providing a stable connection between the capitals of Poland and Austria. In Vienna, there are convenient transfers to long-distance trains to Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Croatia. In Poland, the train offers convenient transfers in Warsaw to the Tricity area. Much of the route runs on modernized lines, improving travel times and punctuality. The train is a good competitor to flights and is unrivaled by road transport.

The IC train “Sobieski” Warsaw–Vienna departs from Warsaw Wschodnia station at 1:44 PM. Departure from Warsaw Centralna station at 1:50 PM. Arrival at Vienna Hbf at 9:49 PM. Arrival at Wien Westbahnhof station at 9:53 PM. Ticket prices start at 152 PLN.

For international trains, each route is assigned a train number. The IC/EC “Sobieski” runs as a pair of trains: No. 108 – in one direction (Bohumín / Vienna – Warsaw). No. 109 – in the opposite direction (Warsaw – Bohumín / Vienna).

The situation is different for domestic InterCity trains. The train number usually has five digits. The first two digits indicate the construction areas (previously directorates and districts). This is what it looks like in practice (area mapping): 1 → Warsaw, 2 → Lublin, 3 → Kraków. 4 → Sosnowiec / (Katowice region), 5 → Gdańsk, 6 → Wrocław, 7 → Poznań, 8 → Szczecin, (9 — reserve / special). Here’s an example: 38100 → “3” = start in the Kraków area, “8” = end in the Szczecin area; “100” is the rest of the number identifying the specific route. 83100 → vice versa: start in the Szczecin area, end in the Kraków area — so it logically corresponds to a route in the opposite direction.
